Gyermekmunka - Child Labor

O.K., the grand prize in the child labor/home improvement category certainly goes to my sister's toddler Mark, who is an expert in sweeping and mopping the floor, and is apparently busy doing his janitorial chores all day and every day. But hey, we shouldn't complain, either. Lili, at five, paints the walls of our house, free of charge:

(Szóval Timur, te mit tusz produkálni?)

Spring String Concert - Tavaszi Kamarakoncert

Jól is szólt!
It's been a while since you heard Anna play music, I believe. Here's a new recording of her chamber orchestra's spring concert. They're playing Incantations by Richard Meyer. If at first you don't see Anna among the cellists, look closer: she's hiding in the third row, right in front of the basses. Unfortunately I had to record from a pretty bad angle and I could only get half her face and just one arm. Oh well, the music sounded great!

A platán - Our Sycamore

Emlékeztek a gigantikus platánra a házunk előtt, a kocsifeljáró tövében? Arra, amelyik évszaktól függetlenül minden áldott nap potyogtatott magáról valami szemetet, hol üdezöld leveleket, hol sárgulókat, hol ágakat, hol szöszgubókat, de legtöbbször mindent egyszerre? Hát, ez a fa a múlt héten alapos metamorfózison ment keresztül. Nem veszett el, csak átalakult. Ez itt a fa:
Remember the gigantic sycamore in front of our house, right by the driveway? The one that was dropping something every single day regardless of the season: fresh green leaves, yellow leaves, branches, twigs, cherry bombs, but mostly all of these at the same time? Well, it underwent a major makeover last week! Voilà, the tree:

Ez pedig a hűlt helye:
And the void it left behind:

Szerencsétlent most biztos keresi a felesége. Mindennek tetejébe a gyökerei ripityára törték a kocsifeljárónkat. Hogy is sirathatnék meg egy ilyen fát?!
Andras's heart is bleeding, of course, because we killed a living creature. He feels sorry for the squirrels and birds that had their nests on it. And for the dogs that used to lift their legs over its trunk to mark it. And for the ants. And you name it. My heart, on the other hand, is smiling with joy. This darn tree has been dominating hundreds of hours of our free time with the loads of trash it dropped on us. It required a non-stop clean-up on the driveway, on the lawn, in the flowerbeds, on the shrubs, in the shrubs, under the shrubs, behind the shrubs, on just about every square inch of our yard. Moreover, it had a fungus infection, covering the leaves with a thick layer of white fuzz, which triggered allergic reactions in everybody that came into close proximity with it. Plus, its roots seriously damaged the pavement of the driveway. How could I cry for this tree?!

Ugyanakkor a kivágott fa részeit remekül tudjuk hasznosítani. A tönkjéből ledarált mulcs csodásan mutat a virágágyásokban:
We are definitely putting the tree's remains to good use. The shredded wood that was once its stump made beautiful mulch in the flower beds:

Az ágaiból keletkezett faaprólék pedig egyrészt a tavaszi kerti kandallónkba fog befűteni, másrészt a felújított játszótér alapját fogja díszíteni.

Van ám másik fasztorink is.
The wood chips will decorate the ground under the playground in the back yard, while the larger pieces will be perfect to light up the fire in our outdoor fireplace.

We do have another tree story.

36 évesen - At 36

I had a cute little 36th birthday.

Our dear friends, the Youmans, invited us for a festive Sunday brunch complete with Champagne, Eggs Benedict, salmon and asparagus, and a delicious strawberry shortcake. Kerstin is such a great friend of mine; she could not have come up with a sweeter present!

Andris és a gyerekek is elkényeztettek ám! Csudaszép piros rózsacsokrot kaptam a hétfői garnélás mexikói vacsorához, és sok igazán testreszabott kis ajándékot, például háromszínű csokit, chardonnay-ben úszó óriás olajbogyót, és egy saját készítésű kerámiavázát hóvirágoknak.
Andras and the kids gave me a proper pampering, as well. I got a pretty bouquet of red roses with the Mexican steak and shrimp dinner, and some really practical presents, such as gourmet chocolates, large olives in chardonnay brine, and a handmade tripod clay vessel for snowdrops.

The Happy Birthday feeling over the weekend reminded me once again that I am probably the luckiest 36-year-old person in the whole world. Let me make a quick list of my countless blessings as a keepsake, so I can come back to them whenever I feel blue in the future.

I have four wonderful children: Each and every one of them is a whole world of happiness for me, but the four of them together are simply the ultimate joy in life.

I am still in love with the bright and handsome guy I married fourteen years ago.

My mom and dad are young and fit, and they are coming to see us this month!

My nephews are growing and blossoming despite the rough starts that they were faced with.

I enjoy spending time with my in-laws, because they really love and pamper us.

I can always and unconditionally rely on Suzanne, my neighbor and good friend, whenever I need help.

We are important enough to the Youmans to visit us in our home country for the second time.

I have great friends back in Hungary that I can't wait to visit in the summer.

Skype, the video phone service, allows us to stay in almost tangible touch with our friends and family overseas. When I was a kid, this technology seemed almost as impossible to me as vacationing on the moon.

I get to live in the most peaceful and tolerant corner of the world.

I have a sunny, cozy kitchen with a large window overlooking the back yard and aromatic mint plants thriving on my windowsill. I love cooking and baking in here.

Regardless of my undereye wrinkles, I am happy in my body, too. At 36, I still weight 115 lb, just like when I was eighteen. I doesn't get any better, does it?

Búcsú a téltől - Goodbye Winter!

Itt találtam a receptet. Desszertre almás palacsintát sütöttünk,amihez Anna maga főzte a vaniliasodót a Horváth Ilonából.

Szóval jöhet a tavasz. Jön is ám derekasan -- ilyen kedvesen fogadott minket ma a kertben:
Tonight we had our Goodbye Winter dinner. A hearty borscht soup, which was delicious despite the fact that it looked nothing like an authentic borscht that was described in this recipe. For dessert we had apple pancakes sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and topped with vanilla sauce that Anna whipped up from scratch. It felt so good to enjoy these delicious winter tastes one last time this year.

After a brief but mighty oppression over the first few days of March, spring is finally waking up again. Look how sweetly she greeted us in the yard today:

Lili 5. szülinapja - Lili's 5th Birthday

Micsoda nagy nap! Lili hetekig megállás nélkül a szülinapját tervezte.

Gratula!

What a grand day! Lili had been making plans for her 5th birthday non-stop for several weeks. She wanted to go snowtubing on her birthday. No, she wanted to go bowling. No, snowtubing, because we hardly ever go snowtubing. No, bowling, because her friends love bowling too. O.k., bowling, but with a princess theme. And, of course, a princess cake. With her princess friends. Period.

And the way it goes with the 'baby' in the family: she wants it - she gets it. And it's fine with the rest of the crew because she really is the baby. Even at five. So that's what we did. Three princesses (Katrina, Sarah and Alexis)and a handsome young knight (Mark) came to our -modest but cozy- castle to wish Lili a happy 5th birthday and to light up the ballroom in their pretty gowns. Then we switched into modern gear and went bowling. Obviously, Lili was the winner of the day. Literally. She beat everybody, even the moms! Way to go, Princess Lili!

Our family party in the evening was no less fun, either. It was so heartwarming to watch Anna, Nora and Aron adore this little princess. Aren't they sweet?

A távolba szakadt nagyszülők is kitettek ám magukért.
Lili got some really cool presents from her grandparents, too. A Hungarian picture book from her favorite series about a family whose life looks very similar to ours. (You would think that a princess loves princess stories the most, right? Nope, she would much rather hear about the most trivial events of the most everyday earthlings, like the ones in this sweet book.)

Erzsiéktől egy jópofa német társasjátékot kapott, olyan igazi boldog békeidőkbeli játékot igazi piros kis facseresznyékkel, szalmakosárkával, és lábakon álló cseresznyefával.
She also got a cool German board game -- one of those good old games with the 'real' old-fashioned pieces: pretty red wooden cherries, a real straw basket and a 3D cherry tree as a gameboard:

And wait, do I see an engagement ceremony, as well? WOW! This sure is a day to remember! A big Thank You to everybody who made this day so memorable for Lili.
