Halloween 2009

1. számú tény: A Halloween az év legbizarrabb, legmorbidabb, legijesztőbb, legízléstelenebb, legrémségesebb ünnepnapja. Lényege a morbid szimbólumok fetisizálása: egyébként épeszű emberek ilyenkor magukat szörnyekké, vámpírokká, szellemekké, zombikká változtatják, házukból pedig temetőt és pókhálólepte boszorkánytanyát varázsolnak. Tiszta horror!

2. számú tény: A Halloween az év egyik legmókásabb, legszórakoztatóbb, legvidámabb, leggyerekközpontúbb napja. Az apróságok cirádás jelmezekbe öltözve végigkopogtatják az ajtókat a szomszédságban, és cukrot-csokit kapnak ajándékba. Kész meseország számukra!

Ellentmondás? Naná! Nem véletlen, hogy több évig tartott, mire hajlandók voltunk ímmel-ámmal részt venni a Halloween-ünneplésben. Eleinte a Halloweenben nem láttunk mást, mint a zombikat, csontvázakat, démonokat. De ha az ember négy gyereket nevel Amerikában, nem lehet nem észrevenni, mennyi öröm és vidámság kapcsolódik ehhez a naphoz. Ahogy szaporodtak a gyerekeink és sokasodtak a barátok, akikkel együtt játszottunk szellemesdit, kezdtük kapisgálni, hogy a szörnyeteg-világ csak a díszlet, csak úgy, mint a fenyőfa karácsonykor, és maga a Halloween a mókáról, a beöltözősdiről, az ijesztő elemek kifigurázásáról, az elvarázsoltkastély-effektusról, egyszóval a szórakozásról szól.

Tizenhárom évvel és négy gyerekkel magunk mögött ebben az országban akár be is ismerhetjük, hogy egész megkedveltük a Halloweent. Imádunk tökökből arcokat faragni, képesek vagyunk órákig elbíbelődni a gyerekek jelmezeivel és arcfestékeivel, és szeretünk vihorászni a viccesre cicomázott szomszéd gyerekeken. Ráadásul előttünk állnak a szürke, hideg novemberi esték, amikor biztos jól fog jönni itthon a gyerekek kis begyűjtött csokoládéja.

Fact #1: Halloween is the most bizarre, most morbid, most creepy, most distasteful, most hideous celebration of the year. Its leitmotif is a bizarre fetishism which inspires otherwise sane people to turn themselves into monsters, vampires, ghosts and zombies and decorate their homes as cemeteries and haunted houses. It's sheer horror!

Fact #2: Halloween is one of the most fun, most cheerful, most comical and most child-centered days of the year. Kids get to pretend they are someone else in their fancy costumes and visit their neighbors to get some sweet treats. It's a dream-come-true for them!

Contradiction? Exactly! No wonder it took us many years to warm up to the idea of celebrating Halloween. Fact #1 was pretty much all Halloween used to mean to us a decade ago, but raising four kids in the US sure made us aware of Fact #2, as well. In fact, the more kids we have and the more friends we share this day with, the more we realize that the bizarre aspect is just the embellishment, something like a spruce tree for Christmas, but Halloween is really about the pretend-game, the creative play with scary symbols, the sweets, and, let's admit it, the fun of running around on spooky streets in the dark.

So, after thirteen years and four kids, we kind of like Halloween. We love carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, we spend countless hours creating our kids' costumes, and we adore the neighborhood kids in their funny dress-up outfits. Plus, we can probably use some extra chocolate bars that the kids collected on the chillier November nights ahead of us.
