Here's our first discovery in Hungary:
The best remedy for jet lag is to take it easy during the first week.
So we did.

Did we miss anying? -- Nem maradt ki emmi?

A szokásos nyár-eleji programunk a következő:

Amikor júniusban vége a tanévnek, irány a Busch Gardens nevű óriás-vidámpark. Na, ez megvolna.

Amikor a Busch Gardensen túlvagyunk, előássuk a pókhálós bőröndöket a garázsból. Kész ez is.

Amikor a bőröndökről letörölgettük a port, ideje becsomagolni a fél háztartásunkat a kéthónapos európai lébecolásra.

This is how we are programmed every summer:

When school is out in June, it's time to hit the roller-coasters and thrill rides at Busch Gardens. Check.

When Busch Gardens is checked, it's time to dig up the suitcases from the garage. Check.

When the suitcases are out, it's time to pack up half of our household for our annual two-month trip to Europe. Check.

When the last bag is zipped, it's time for Andras to take me and the kids to the airport. This is today.

It sounds so easy since we have the routine mastered, yet the last week before the trip takes the steam out of all of us year after year. Because we tend to cram in a summer's worth of events into one week. In addition to packing up half our household, of course.

Anna, Aron, Nora and Lili want to hang out with their friends 24/7 to make up for the fun that they will be missing out on over the rest of the summer. Who can blame them?

Their mean mom wants to make sure that the kids have decent Hungarian skills when they visit their grandparents so she makes them read Hungarian storybooks and even history and language arts textbooks (!) for one hour every day. Who can blame a mom for this?

Andras took Aron on a two-day canoe trip with their friends, which just happened to be last weekend. Who can blame the boys for doing some boy-stuff together before they are separated for many weeks?

Today is our 15th anniversary, and given that today is not the perfect day to celebrate, Andras and I treated ourselves to a movie and a heavenly dinner two days ago. Who can blame a couple for needing some grown-up time?

We hosted a dinner party last night to say a proper goodbye to our neighbors, the LeFrancois, before we abandon them for the whole summer. Who can blame us for being good neighbors?

I'm going to the salon to get a haircut this afternoon, in the midst of the last-minute chaos. I guess you can blame me for being so self-centered, but I don't care. I desperately need a haircut.

So, tomorrow the kids and I will be on the other side of the Atlantic, with our stuffed suitcases, perfect Hungarian language skills and my pretty hair-do. Waiting for Andras to join us there in August.
